Summary

This annual report summarizes the Commission’s work during 2025, including key meetings, policy discussions, initiatives, and recommendations. It reflects MITSC’s ongoing commitment to supporting a respectful and productive relationship between the State and the Wabanaki Nations for the benefit of present and future generations.

Throughout 2025, the Commission focused on increasing public understanding of the Wabanaki tribal nations and their citizens, with outcomes reflecting that commitment.

With support from the State of Maine, the Wabanaki nations, several private funders, and members of the public, the Commission completed a number of educational initiatives. Revisions to the MITSC website improved usability and engagement. This included the expansion of the MITSC Library and adding documentary and multimedia resources in the website's new Featured Media collection.

The Commission also launched an audiobook version of the SEA RUN study, which examines the impact of state policy decisions on traditional tribal fisheries. The audiobook was narrated by Wabanaki voices. In addition, work began on the development of a Wabanaki Cultural Competency Course designed to provide non-tribal individuals with information and practical skills to strengthen communication and collaboration with the tribal nations.
