
The number of Native Americans enrolling in college has declined by 40% in the last decade and a half. The disparities are particularly noticeable in science and engineering, where Native American students are underrepresented at all higher education levels.
The University of Maine System is taking steps designed to address this trend. At UMaine Machias, in the Passamaquoddy ancestral territory, professors are combining Western and Indigenous scientific perspectives in the classroom.

The Maine Indian Tribal-State Commission (MITSC) is an inter-governmental entity created by the Maine Implementing Act of 1980. Six members are appointed by the State, two by the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, two by the Passamaquoddy Tribe, and two by the Penobscot Indian Nation. The thirteenth, who is the chairperson, is selected by the other twelve.
