Written by
from Maine Public Radio
June 21 has been officially designated as Native American Veterans Day. Governor John Baldacci signed a bill establishing the designation this morning. The measure, aimed at recognizing the courage and service of Native American members of the military, requires the governor to issue an annual proclamation on the occasion. "Our troops, past and present, represent the best of Maine and our nation," Baldacci said in a statement issued after the signing. "For our Native American members, whether it be through service in the National Guard, Armed Forces, or Reserves, it is vital that they know that everyone in Maine appreciates their service and sacrifices." The bill was sponsored by Rep. Donald Soctomah, of the Passamaquoddy Tribe. Soctomah was among those who attended the ceremonial signing today. Also on hand were representatives from Sons of the American Revolution.
